Removal of perchlorate by a lab-scale constructed wetland using achira (Canna indica L.)

چکیده

Achira (Canna indica L.) has not yet been tested for its potential in removing perchlorate (ClO4−) from wastewater. In this study, constructed wetlands with and without achira were used to investigate the removal efficiency mechanism of perchlorate. The results showed that more ClO4− was removed by relative those without. Perchlorate decreased time, whereas stably removed. terms content, tissues descending order of: leaf > aerial stem flower or rhizome root. concentrated leaves (more than 55.8%) rather root (less 0.67%). Mass balance calculation plant uptake accounted 5.81–7.34% initial input, while microbial degradation 29.39–62.48%. favorable soil microorganism growth proliferation turn biodegradation. Furthermore, effluent pH increased wetland columns promoting removal. indicating promote improving rhizosphere environment.

Removal of Pharmaceutical Products in a Constructed Wetland

Background: There is growing interest in the natural and constructed wetlands for wastewater treatment. While nutrient removal in wetlands has been extensively investigated, information regarding the degradation of the pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) has only recently been emerging. PPCPs are widely distributed in urban wastewaters and can be removed to some extent by the con...

Removal of Mercury from Wastewater Using a Constructed Wetland

Removal of mercury from municipal wastewater using a constructed wetland was studied. Wastewater, wetland plant, and sediment samples were analyzed using an advanced mercury analyzer AMA-254. Average concentrations of total mercury in inflow and outflow water were 0.157 and 0.057 μg L−1, respectively. Significant fraction of mercury (38.2 %) was removed from wastewater during pretreatment. Merc...

Pb Removal Using Mixed Substrates in a Constructed Laboratory-Scale Unvegetated Vertical Subsurface-Flow Wetland

In this study, five mixed substrates – SSFGF, FSSGF, FSSFF, FSSFG, and FSFGF – consisting of fly ash, sludge, soil, fine cinder, gravels, and fine sand, were made in order to test the removal effect of lead. Multiple comparisons and analysis of variance were used to analyze physicochemical properties and the removal efficiency of lead. The test results showed that for five substrates, the efflu...

Studies of Removal of Chromium by Model Constructed Wetland

Chromium is a pollutant present in tannery wastewater, its removal is necessary for protection of the environment. Penisetum purpureum, Brancharia decumbens and Phragmites australis were grown hydroponically in experimental gravel beds to determine their potential for the phytoremediation of solutions containing 10 and 20 mg Cr dm. These concentrations, similar to tannery wastewater after initi...

Nitrogen removal in constructed wetland systems

Since the mid 1990s, constructed wetlands have been increasingly used as a lowenergy ‘green’ technique, in the treatment of wastewater and stormwater, driven by the rising cost of fossil fuels and increasing concern about climate change. Among various applications of these wetlands, a significant area is the removal of nitrogenous pollutants to protect the water environment and to enable effect...
